Halloween – A Reflection Of Society?

As you get older Halloween changes and it gets different to what it was in childhood. It suddenly becomes less about wearing fancy dress, trick or treating for sweets and Halloween parties. My mother was never very creative so she didn’t make fancy costumes for me and I usually just had to wear a black bin bag or stay in my ordinary clothes. Life wasn’t as sophisticated as being able to go and buy a fancy costume. Despite the fact that I usually didn’t have a costume Halloween was about fun and competing with friends to see how many sweets you could eat. Today Halloween has changed and it’s more acceptable for adults to wear fancy dress and even to go Trick or Treating. Many adults choose to go Trick or Treating with children as their chaperone.

Today, Halloween reflects the society that we live in. As news travels of bad things happening to children the risk of Trick or Treating is something a lot of parents are not willing to face. Organised Trick or Treating parties are the trend with lot’s of adult chaperones. Rather than allowing children to go out Trick or Treating it is far safer to have a small party at home. Games and competitions can be lot’s of fun and prizes can consist of sweets that children would usually get Trick or Treating. Instead of frightening costumes that little children might be afraid of there are now plenty of costumes that are child friendly. Clowns, fairies, princesses or their favourite celebrity are good choices for small children.

Today there is a lot of media hype surrounding Halloween. When I was younger we just talked about it with friends and family. Today we have Halloween products including sweets, clothing, gifts, flowers and lot’s more besides. When Halloween time is near movies are shown on the television that are frightening. Programmes specially made with Halloween in mind showing blood and guts. People think it is normal to be filled with fear, horror and terror. It is not surprising that the society around us is changing.

It can be difficult for children if you don’t like them to go out Trick or Treating because they can get made fun of at school. Trick or Treating turns from something that was fun to something children compete with their peers about. Others will see them as different if they don’t participate in activities associated with Halloween, but they can still have plenty of fun without worshipping the darker side of Halloween. Many people focus on the darker side of Halloween, but it doesn’t have to be this way.

If we aim to celebrate and spend quality time with family and friends at Halloween it has to be a good thing. Halloween does often bring families together as they will work together to prepare parties or go Trick or Treating together. There is no reason that this holiday has to be bad if you concentrate on the good things about it. It can be a very exciting time for children and one that they look forward to.

Some people feel left out of Halloween activities, but this is only because they decide not to follow them. With television filled with so many advertisements about Halloween it is not surprising that some people feel left out, but Halloween is a personal choice. Children can learn a lot by dressing up and by taking this away from them you are taking away their personal choice to celebrate Halloween. If you choose not to celebrate Halloween you might feel alienated from society, but you can have fun in other ways. Some people look at Halloween as a a holiday that celebrates the deceased and for some this can be depressing. Still others enjoy dressing up with educational costumes and celebrating with family and friends. At the end of the day if you are not hurting others then what harm can it be?
