200px-Exorcist_ver2 No1. The Exorcist. Directed by William Friedking in 1973 had 10 academy award nominations and received 2. This is a film about a girl who is possessed by a demon and the battle with her mother and 2 priest to have her exorcised.

No2. Nosferatu. Directed by F. W. Murnau in 1922.  This is a German expressionist horror film which is an  unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

200px-Psycho_(1960) No3. Psycho. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1960’s, the screenplay was written by Joseph Stefano adapted from the novel of the same name written by Robert Bloch. The film is about a secretaries nightmarish encounter with a motel owner.  The 1998 re-make by Gus Van Sant is also a good watch and I do believe there is 2 sequels and a prequel.

No4. The Orphanage. Directed by Juan Antonio Bayona is a 2007 Spanish language horror. I felt I had to put a film that is more modern and this is a hair raising film about a woman who returns to the orphanage she grew up in planning to re-open it but her son starts to imagine disturbing things.

(If you want to stick to films made in the 20th Century go for The  Shining directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1980)

200px-ThingPoster No5. The Thing. Directed by John Carpenter in 1982 and written by Bill Lancaster. This is a Science Fiction Horror based in the Antarctic involving a research team that encounters a a parasitic extraterrestrial life form that assimilates other organisms and in turn imitates them.

(I just have to add that The Last House on the Left written and directed by Wes Craven is well worth watching and was very controversial when released only just fell short of my top 5. I also enjoyed the 2009 remake.)
