Nightwatch

Ok, so this really isn’t a horror film per se, more fantasy really. But it’s filled with vampires, witches and werewolves among other creatures of the night. They are known as ‘Others’ and live alongside us humans and are divided into the forces of light and the forces of dark. These two sides signed a truce several centuries ago to end a devastating battle that had raged between them. Ever since, the forces of light govern the day while the night belongs to their dark, and each side has to police the other. Legend has it that the 2 forces will be unbalanced by one ‘Great Other’, who will choose a side and thus win the battle, and so each side must play to win him over….

Daywatch

An Other who fights for the light against the forces of the dark tries to track down an ancient artifact which has the power to change destiny itself, for if it falls into the hands of the dark forces, they will prevail and chaos and darkness with ensue throughout the world. He has to accomplish this while being framed for a murder he didn’t commit, dodging witches and vampire henchmen at every turn. These movies are superb in every way, the effects are amazing and the sets are brilliant. A must-see for all movie-lovers.

Let the Right One in

Oskar is a lonely, bullied 12-year old who dreams of revenge against his tormentors. He meets with Eli, a peculiar girl. She can’t tolerate food or the sun and needs to be invited into houses. Eli gives Oskar support and strength to retaliate but when he realises that Eli needs to drink human blood to live he’s faced with a choice. How much can love forgive? Let The Right One In is a violent, gory yet highly romantic story, set in the suburbs of Stockholm in 1982.

The Orphanage

Former orphan Laura raises her adopted son together with her husband in the old house and former orphanage where she was raised as a child. Her son Simon is HIV positive and after moving there, acquires some imaginary friends. Laura decides to reopen the orphanage for the local disabled children and during the opening party, Simon vanishes. This old-fashioned horror story is compelling and extremely atmospheric.

Ils

Writer Lucas and his teacher wife Clementine live peacefully in their isolated but idyllic country house, but one night they are awoken by strange noises…their car is stolen…. they are not alone… a group of hooded figures begin to stalk and terrorize them throughout the night. A surprising lack of gore makes this film all the more chilling, prepare to spend the evening listening for noises outside the house!

Tale of two sisters

Two sisters return home after spending time in a mental institution, to their father and cruel stepmother. Once there, in addition to dealing with their stepmother’s obsessive and unbalanced ways, an interfering ghost also affects their recovery. All is not what it seems in this highly suspenseful, intricate tale.

Ju on

It looks like a normal house, but it is infected by an evil curse and vengeful spirit and anyone who sets foot inside the house is marked for a terrifying haunting which will not rest. One by one, those who have been tainted by the house begin to die, and nowhere is safe. This Japanese movie has since been remade as The Grudge with Sarah Michelle Gellar, but the original is far more terrifying, not one to watch alone.

Tetsuo

A strange man known only as the "metal fetishist", who is compelled to stick scrap metal into his body, is the victim of a hit and run by a Japanese businessman, out for a drive with his girlfriend. The businessman then notices that he is gradually mutating into a half-human, half-machine hybrid and the man he hit is not dead but undergoing the same process. This movie is very powerful but utterly nightmarish and will prove to be a challenge to watch for some. Not for the faint of heart.

Rec

A TV reporter and her cameraman cover the night shift at the local fire station. Receiving a call from an obviously distressed lady trapped in her apartment, they arrive at the block only to be quarantined within some time later. What follows is a hellish and intense nightmare……….

Oldboy

A drunken man is kidnapped from the street and locked in a cell seemingly without explanation. After 15 years he is released, given money, a mobile phone and expensive clothing. As he tries to track down his captor and obtain his revenge, he soon finds out that not only his kidnapper still has plans for him, plans that will serve as an even worse finale to 15 years of imprisonment. This film is very clever but utterly harrowing, and very hard to watch at times but worth it for hard-core Asian cinema fans.
